Mayor Doris Prince’s Speech On Lunar New Year Eve

E-mail Print PDF

As we venture into a New Year, we cannot forget the events of 2008. We went through two (2) evacuations, with the Hurricane Ike causing severe devastation to our area. Just as we were near recovering from Hurricane Rita in 2005, the storm that captured our attention was yet to come. It came with a fury and left behind evidence of destruction and despair. However, we are not a people who believe that just because you are down that there is no reason for you not to get up. We believe in rising above our unpleasant circumstances and we know how to start a rebuilding process.

In spite of all that, we found ourselves in a history-making year. We saw people of all nationalities, all races, all religions and all creeds come together to bring about a change in this change. We witnessed the togetherness and the joining of hearts to force a positive change in this great country of the United States of America with the election of President Barack O’bama. We saw the young and the aged come together and say “Yes we can make a difference”.

Here in the great city of Port Arthur we have the opportunity to say “Yes we can make a difference.” We can make a difference in our city and in the lives of our wonderful citizens if we continue to work together and bind our heads and hearts in ways that we have never done before.

Let us continue to embrace one another as family, to be there when the need arises and to be willing to help with those needs. Let us all work for a better New Year and for blessings in abundance.

My prayers are with each of you individually and for all of us as a family as we celebrate this New Year of Peace and Prosperity. Please be mindful that I am here for you and that I love each of you. Again, be blessed.
