E-mail Print PDF

You, your family and friends are cordially invited to two events in November sponsored by Buu Mon Buddhist Temple.

The first is the Samanera (novice) ordination of Matthew Scott Rhone (Buddhist name Sucara) to be held at Phap Luan Buddhist Culture Center located at 13913 S. Post Oak Road, Houston, TX 77045 in conjunction with their annual Kathina Ceremony (offering of new robes to the venerable monks and nuns).  With this Samanera ordination Matthew is recognized by the sangha (community of monks) as having completed his basic training and now will proceed to the next level of training which will lead to his high ordination as a bhikkhu in the next few years.  Both ceremonies will take place on November 1st, 2009 the Kathina Celebration starting at 10:30 AM and the Samanera Ordination at 12:30 PM.

On this day, Venerable Giac Dang, Abbot of the Phap Luan Buddhist Culture Center, and resident Monks, joined by Most Venerable Huyen Viet , and Bhante Kassapa from Buu Mon Buddhist Temple in Port Arthur, TX as well as other Venerable Monks and Nuns, will chant, give dhamma talks and receive robes.  As part of the custom of the Kathina Ceremony the congregation in procession will present new robes and gifts to the attending monks.  Kathina is an annual event in which monks celebrate another year of monastic service and receive new robes and dana (gifts) from the congregation.

The Samanera Ordination is a rare opportunity for Buddhist and non – Buddhist in the Southeast Texas area to observe a ceremony that is not often preformed in the United States.  The Samanera ordination of Sucara , an Anglo who is committing himself to a life of service as a Buddhist monk, makes this ordination even more unique.

The second November event you are invited to is the Kathina Robe Ceremony at Buu Mon Buddhist Temple on Sunday, November 15th, at 10:30 AM.  Buu Mon Buddhist Temple is located at 2701 Procter Street, Port Arthur, Texas.  Please invite your friends and family.

On this day, The Venerable Monks of Buu Mon Buddhist Temple, joined by visiting Venerable Monks, led by the Most Venerable Huyen Viet, Abbot of the Buu Mon Buddhist Temple, will perform a ceremonial alms walk, a dhamma talk, chanting and receiving of the Kathina robes.  As part of the custom of the Kathina Ceremony the congregation in procession will present new robes and gifts to the attending monks.  A Vietnamese vegetarian meal will be offer to those attending the celebration.

Please make time to celebrate with us the Buu Mon Buddhist Temple and the Phap Luan Buddhist Culture Center of Houston our annual Kathina Ceremonies, as well as, the memorable Samanera Ordination of Sucara (Matthew Scott Rhone).
